All roads led to the Atlantic Centre here on the Isle of Luing last night for the first running of the Oktoberfest and a grand job they made of it too with a fantastic array of well prepared food on the buffet table plus the requisite number of German Beir in casks and thanks to the topical quiz on German general knowledge I know that we were a month late as the real thing is held in September.
No worries – providing it doesn’t clash with Bonfire Night or Christmas and is over by Hogmanay I don’t think anyone on the island is too bothered.
As newcomers to Luing – Helen and I weren’t too sure how far to go with costumes but – as ever H got the mood right with her attempt as a Tyrolean waitress but couldn’t have been 100% correct as no one ordered a bier from her. I thought she looked lovely in her home made pinny that started life as a cushion cover and the wee ‘lug warmer cum Tyrolean hat’ was gathering dust on a peg in an Oban ‘Sale’waiting for someone to rescue it until a few hours previous.
The old fool obviously went as an extra from Auf Viedersehn Pet. But – wearing the stetson bought several years ago secondhand in backwoods Oklahoma with an ostrich feather pulled from the tail of a terrified burrd he didn’t quite catch in the Kalahari Desert even longer ago – he was more likely to be taken for a refugee from Ben Cartright’s Bonanza series.
It proved to be a real fun night out and Allison – our winsome MC showed us how it should be done.
Roll on Oktoberfest 2017 – any date after Hogmanay 2016 will do 🙂
