Memory Lane with Arai —

Doesn’t take much to get the memory banks into gear – this time it was brought on by my current Arai coming back from a service as mentioned in the previous post —

Nuthin else would do other than to search through my galleries for a couple of pics showing my Arai Rapide from thirty years ago —

Here we are – the meat in the sandwich on the ex-Jim Moodie Honda VFR 400 NC30 – racing No 391 – coming out of the hairpin onto the main straight at Knockhill —

Same helmet – same circuit – different bike – down Duffus Dip on the short approach to McIntyre’s with my self-built Yamaha TDM 860 —

I loved that bike – built from my standard road going TDM – Howard Cross sorted the motor with some cunning lathe work and I did the rest.

Fitted a set of lightweight Marchesini wheels which had been destined for a pure Honda 250 two-stroke race bike. Chopped the standard fuel tank down so that my spare Yamaha FZR600 fibre glass tank cover would fit. Chopped off most of the rear subframe and fitted a fibreglass single seat unit from the same FZR600 source. Stuck in a Yamaha 1000 Exup fuel pump to.make sure she was delivering enough go-juice to the modified carb. Fitted a home-brewed exhaust system that frightened the Marshall’s at Donnington Park Race Circuit. Messed about with alternative sprockets – chain size – forced air induction and suchlike then finally fitted a natty little spare half fairing from one of my Honda VFR400 NC30’s and Ali at Bike Paints did the pink and purple paint shceme —

Sounds like a lot of work but it was all done and dusted over two weeks 👍🤠

The Aria Quantum ST —

Never grows old —

At least not when you still have friends in the trade —-

Mine just came back with new vents fitted – visor and pinlock system renewed plus cleaned inside and out for the price of the postage – I haven’t had service like that since I would have my helmet done by the Aria Service boys in the TT paddock thirty years ago —

Must admit I did find a gentle hint in a note at the bottom of the box pointing out – as my Aria is coming up to ten years old I should really be looking at retiring it in favour of a new one 🤠👍
